this one (both light and dark) is actually a bit unfortunate because this is the cropped version. i drew digigrade legs back then and hes actually squatting on a large branch or something. the legs were really anatomically elaborate and no record that i could find survives of them because i was self conscious of it looking "weird" despite me being the only artist at the time to have action shots of digigrade legs that i know of. the skull from deerskull dant is now worn on the back for convenience and the canada patch is removed bc i thought it was unrealistic even though it was cool

fourth comic. orange text box is of ollie, then known as matt (from wii sports). the AAAAAAAAAAAAAHH!! in reality was actually him reacting to a game he was playing. we also see dante in the very first depiction of an in-between stage between orange fur and winter white. as a general rule of thumb, white version was drawn when it was actually winter and orange the rest of the year, but the rule would bend a bit over time

fifth comic. pages from here on out mostly follow an aspect ratio guideline i still use to this day; doing some math, 2550px x 3300px comes out to 8.5 x 11 ratio which is our fucked up standard for printer paper here in the US, and i would simply turn it on its side for a hamburger orientation (lol). anyways this comic was based on a dream i had where im mae borowski and i jump into the depths

i really liked Fallen Order and frankie (who also went as muffin at the time) had just gotten gift art of tawa (his sona) as a jedi, at the same time the jojo duel stance was a popular meme. making this was genuinely good perspective practice even though it was heavily based (not quite traced) off the image. tawa is still frankie's sona to this day much like how dante evolved gradually over time and thats p cool

the very first drawing of kara, another oc. she has an official birthday of march 31st, and was originally inspired by this dopetalk video featuring Nightmind (youtube) that came out on the same date, where i thought black cats were already really cool and i just caved and drew a new character right then and there. theres so much lore.... maybe ill write something on it later

you can tell this was the end of the year because of dante's fur, and you can see that despite being semi traced from the meme (using digigrade anatomy), sketching the body structure, then sketching the clothes, then drawing lineart, then coloring, then shading, was an absolute nightmare of a process that continued into 2020 and 2021. by far the biggest limiter in actual draw time was the act of basically redrawing the whole damn thing 3 times because thats how i thought good drawings had to be done

dark version for realistic dusk lighting. eyes however remain the same orange band color and brightness, not quite glowing but more like the reflectivity of animal eyes. maybe a little glowing is cool too. this was a longstanding feature too

the more memorable lite version for clarity. its worth saying here that "dante" was more of a collective term for a lot of drawings than a consistent character. theres dante the fursona, dante the highschool age hermit living in the woods and part of a loosely documented comic series i never actually made, and dante as in me. the distinction between these depended on context. here we have hermit runaway dante that scares people out of the woods in canada. i knew i could draw the antlers better but it took so long i stopped caring, and for a long time this remained a magnum opus

i dont know why i had the idea to have war paint, just thought that i wanted a character to be doing something with their hands for once. but i also think the reason i finally just drew this was because the stormy dant.png image wasnt good enough. at the time, dante had orange fur, brown hands, feet, tail and ear tips, a tan underbelly, brown eyes and goggles in what i call dante 1.0. also has that empty piercing because even though i hated omonoth maybe i secretly liked getting even bad attention, and having an excuse to have a piercing
